Online checkout: what to set up beyond the payment button

Hosted or integrated, saved cards, fraud rules and subscription retries. The four decisions that decide conversion and cost on an online store.

Accepting a card online is easy. Doing it in a way that converts, keeps fraud out without blocking real customers, and does not take a percentage of your growth is a set of decisions worth making deliberately.

Hosted checkout or your own

A hosted checkout is a page the gateway serves under your branding. It is mobile-optimized, built to convert, and card data never touches your systems, which keeps your compliance scope small. An integrated checkout uses the gateway’s APIs and SDKs inside your own pages: more control, more responsibility. Either way, test in a sandbox before going live, and choose a gateway that scales without a rebuild. A setup that handles ten transactions today should handle ten million without renegotiating.

Saved payment methods

Returning customers checking out in seconds is the single biggest conversion lever on a store with repeat buyers. Tokenized cards also see better approval rates and, on many setups, lower processing costs.

Fraud protection that does not cost sales

Suspicious transactions should be flagged; legitimate customers should sail through. Rules tuned too tight cost more in lost orders than they save in chargebacks. Measure both.

Subscriptions and failed payments

For subscription businesses, failed payments are one of the largest sources of lost revenue, and most are recoverable. Retry logic that understands why a payment failed, card updater services that refresh expired cards, and dunning emails that arrive before the customer notices keep subscribers active.

Orders that do not come through the checkout

Phone orders, invoices and B2B sales need a virtual terminal in the browser and payment links you can send. No hardware, same reporting.

Who takes a percentage of your growth

Many platforms take a cut of every sale and make it painful to leave. Full data portability and transparent pricing with no revenue share are the terms to insist on, and the pricing model behind the gateway matters as much as the gateway; see Flat rate or interchange-plus.

The options, from a payment link you can send today to a custom checkout, are on Online payments.
